Targeted support for hard-hit businesses and employees, and people looking for work and undergoing training, are sensible ways to use money from the public purse. But this won’t be enough unless we grasp the nettle of economic reform. We have to open the “too-hard” basket to tackle taxes that deter investment; regulation that kills entrepreneurship; and industrial relations that scare people from hiring and managing their workforces productively.

The Government is extending the JobKeeper Payment by a further six months to March 2021. Support will be targeted to businesses and not-for-profits that continue to be significantly impacted by the Coronavirus. The payment rate will be reduced and a lower payment rate will be introduced for those who work fewer hours. Other eligibility rules remain unchanged.
